1 Timothy 6: 18 Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share.
Paul speaks of the rich, and he means me, b/c we in modern America have wealth beyond what Paul could have imagined when we are middle class. Doing good and sharing are commands for me. I must be generous and look for the opportunity to do good deeds.
Furthermore, I want to do this. I know I can be greedy, holding on to my wealth "for a rainy day." But in the Christmas season, especially, I am taking great joy from my Advent Random Acts of Kindness. I was disappointed today, b/c my planned recipient was not @ work. So I had to scramble to come up with something I could do @ home.
And for the bigger picture I support my church and many other charities. I try to remember those who do not have the advantages I do. Could I do more? Of course. Should I? You can count on me to reflect on that, even if I do not act on it all the time.
Prayer: I thank you, Lord, for the blessings which put me in a position to be able to share and do good deeds for others. I have been poor, and I try to remember what it is like to be uncertain about your future finances. Guide me to share in the way that You would like to see me share. Direct my actions to good deeds that You see in my path as I move through this life. Make me a more generous person overall.
Amen
