Matthew 17: 2 While these followers watched him, Jesus was changed. His face became bright like the sun, and his clothes became white as light.
Next Jesus talks with Elijah and Moses. The verses indicate that John the Baptist was Elijah. What a strange thing to happen! Peter offers to put up shelters for them, but then God speaks. When the disciples rise, Jesus is alone.
I was struck by the image of Jesus bathed in holy light. He is with the disciples, but he isn't really one of them. That's hard for them, and me, to understand. Fully human and fully God at the same time....
Prayer: Help me to understand Your nature, Lord. I want to be a good follower, but I am not always able to comprehend. Guide me to understand and to follow You more perfectly.
Amen

Matthew 16: 24 Then Jesus said to his followers, “If any of you want to be my follower, you must stop thinking about yourself and what you want. You must be willing to carry the cross that is given to you for following me.
Jesus was upset that Peter said that he shouldn't have to go through the death and resurrection he told them was coming. He knew the suffering and pain was a necessary part of the new covenant. He said that people standing there would see the kingdom of God.
It was the "stop thinking about yourself" that grabbed my attention. We have been doing a lot of talking with family at the memorial service, and some family members are accused of this. It's hard for all of us not to think of ourselves and our desires. I have been focused on meeting Mother's needs, and I am tired of it. It seems that anyone can become accustomed to that kind of attention. Then they don't appreciate your efforts and expect that kind of treatment without considering how the other person feels.
Prayer: I pray for a balance to return to my relationship with my mother. I don't want to feel so resentful, and I don't want her to think it's all right to take advantage of me or anyone else. Please guide us back to a relationship based on loving kindness.
Amen

Matthew 15: 9
"'Their worship of me is worthless.
The things they teach are only human rules.’”
"'Their worship of me is worthless.
The things they teach are only human rules.’”
Jesus is quoting Isaiah. He is speaking about the Pharisees. He also talks about the blind leading the blind. The Pharisees were critical of the disciples. Jesus can see that their religious practices are not based on a love of God. They are based on judgment and feeling superior to their fellow men.
I have been thinking about my family a lot after traveling to my uncle's funeral. I come from faithful people, but the judgment that came with their religion has caused bad feelings. I am guessing that the Pharisees are not the only ones who have confused religious rules with the love that is even greater than faith.
Prayer: Help me to always remember that my faith in Your goodness is more important than human rules. Guide me to show Your loving kindness to Your people always.

Lord, I cry out to you for help:
“You are my place of safety.
You are all I need in life.”
Lord, I cry out to you for help:

David is still fighting. The people of Judah follow him, but the Israelites do not. In the NT reading, people come to Jesus for healing. They only want to touch the hem of his coat.
The verse in the Psalm tied the OT and NT readings together for me. We all need God, and without Him, our lives will never be complete. David lived a life beyond my comprehension, but he never forgot that fact. The people in the crowd were sick, and they knew God held the answer. We are so blessed that we lose sight of this eternal truth sometimes.
Prayer: Lord, I need You. I know that You are always there, but I don't always call on You like I should. Help me to be a more faithful servant. I praise Your holy name.

Matthew 13: 8. But some of the seed fell on good ground. There it grew and made grain. Some plants made 100 times more grain, some 60 times more, and some 30 times more.
Jesus tells several stories about disciples. There is the yeast in the bread dough. There's the mustard seed. There are weeds sown by the devil among the wheat. And there are the seeds which fall on different kinds of ground.
This reminded me of my Hesse family who gathered yesterday to pay tribute to my late Uncle Al. Most of us were the blessed seeds which fell on good ground. From my grandparents, who were faithful Christians, sprang their children, grandchildren, and now 2 more generations of people of faith.
Prayer: Lord, I thank you that I was blessed to be born a descendant of A.H. and Julia Hesse. My mother was raised in Your church, and so was I. The seeds fell on good ground, and my faith is such a comfort to me. Praise be to God!

Matthew 10: 41 Whoever accepts a prophet because he is a prophet will get the same reward a prophet gets. And whoever accepts a godly person just because that person is godly will get the same reward a godly person gets.
Jesus is sending his disciples out into Israel to teach and heal. He tells them to carry nothing, to be smart like snakes (because of the evil they will encounter), but also harmless like doves. He says the "shake the dust off your feet" remark about towns that don't welcome them. And he concludes with this thought.
Accepting other Christians is not as easy as it sounds. I may believe that a person has true faith, but that doesn't mean we won't have our differences. It could be a different interpretation of God's word; that's almost inevitable. It could also be a clash of personality. I need to remember to honor all people of faith, because my Saviour tells me to do that.
Prayer: Help me to recognize Your faithful people whenever I encounter them. I want to interact with Your people as a Christian sister should. I respect faith, and my words and actions should reflect my respect when I encounter Your people.
Amen

Matthew 9: 38. "God owns the harvest. Ask him to send more workers to help gather his harvest.”
Jesus has been busy, healing and dealing with those critical Pharisees. He is worried about the people. They need a shepherd to lead them to the Father, but he and the disciples can't get to all in need.
I love this sentiment. I pray for the ill, for those who grieve, for persecuted people, but I never think to pray for more people to spread God's word. I will be adding that to my daily prayers.
Prayer: Your people are in great need There is sin and evil intent all around us. Send more loving people to represent You so that all can have the opportunity to find Your glorious kingdom. I love You, and I want to share Your love.

Matthew 8: 34 Then the whole town went out to see Jesus. When the people saw him, they begged him to leave their area.
Jesus does so much in this chapter. He heals, he calms the storm, but the part which upset the people was sending the demons into the pigs. The pigs were drowned, and their keepers told the townspeople.
Why was the loss of some pigs so upsetting? The Jews don't eat pork, so they wouldn't be personally affected. But someone's livelihood was gone. People pay way too much attention to the financial when salvation for eternity stands right in front of them.
Prayer: Lord, help me to see when I am like the townspeople. I want to do Your will, but selfish interest in my own well-being takes precedence. Guide me to be more caring.

Matthew 7: 13. "You can enter true life only through the narrow gate. The gate to hell is very wide, and there is plenty of room on the road that leads there. Many people go that way."
Jesus is taking about the Christian lifestyle. We should not judge others. We should treat our neighbor as we want to be treated. We should be kind and generous to those in need. We need to acknowledge our Lord and Saviour. Then we will find the narrow gate.
I'm a day late completing this. I thought I would get back to it last night, but there was so much to do. I am getting ready to travel for my uncle's funeral, and I was thinking about this passage. GG's getting ready for her uncle's funeral too. She feels certain that he chose the gate to hell, and that really bothers her.
Prayer: I want to pray for those who mourn. I especially pray for believers who feel that the loss they suffer is eternal, because the ones they love never knew You. Comfort Your people, my God.

Matthew 6: 33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
Jesus gives us the Lord's Prayer in this chapter, along with a lot of other advice about our worship practice. Besides prayer, he talks about giving and about fasting. He talks a lot about the concerns of daily life, such as eating and getting clothes. He tells us that we can't serve both God and wealth. Instead we go first to God, and we never have to worry about those earthly concerns.
I need to follow this advice, but it's so rough. I get overwhelmed before I remember that God has this. I hang my head, knowing that I could have avoided all that worry, but I start the next day in the same self-centered way.
Prayer: Lord, I will seek Your kingdom instead of relying on myself. I will be a faithful servant, and I will remember to pause and pray when the time is right. Be with me always.

Matthew 4: 16
"the people who sat in darkness
have seen a great light,
and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death
light has dawned.”
"the people who sat in darkness
have seen a great light,
and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death
light has dawned.”
I am familiar with the Isaiah quote, but I didn't put it in context. Jesus had been tempted, and he found out that John the Baptist had been arrested. So he left and went to Galilee. There he fulfilled this prophecy, that the people of Zebulon and Napthali, an area devastated by the Assyrians, would see the Messiah.
The quote is great. So many of us can feel the joy of those in the darkness who are saved by finding Jesus. The context takes it from the personal to the cultural. I saw the pictures of the Holocaust Remembrance Day yesterday. The chosen people have seen some very dark times. And yet God chose them to raise His son
Prayer: I have been in the darkness, Lord, and I have seen the light my Saviour brought me. I am ready to go into the dawn of a new life with You in eternity. The darkness can't hold me, because I am Your beloved child. Thanks for saving me.

1 Samuel 17: 45 But David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with sword and spear and javelin; but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.
The story of David and Goliath is well known. Goliath disrespected God's people for 40 days before David arrived. The people had so little faith that they would not believe that they could defeat the giant. David had great faith, and he did just what he said he would, in the name of God.
The NT reading has the flight to Egypt after the visit of the Wise Men. All are excellent examples of people of faith who were in tune with God. If we pause to pray and listen for that still, small voice within our hearts where Jesus lives, imagine what we could do!
Prayer: I am listening, Lord. Make my steps as sure as David's and Joseph's. I know that all my troubles begin when I stray from You.
Amen

1 Samuel 16: 18. One of the young men answered, “I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite who is skillful in playing, a man of valor, a warrior, prudent in speech, and a man of good presence; and the Lord is with him.”
Saul let popularity trump God's word. He was told to completely destroy the Amelekites, but he took their king prisoner, and he let his people keep the best livestock. God turned His back on Saul, and he found David to be the next king. Saul is sick when he realizes the consequences of his sin. His servants suggest David as a musician to soothe Saul. Saul loves him and keeps him nearby.
I am intrigued by this description of David. God loved David so much. I know that some of what others saw in David was God's love reflected in his personality. David didn't have an easy life, and he sinned, but he was truly God's bae, and he became an ancestor of the Messiah.
Prayer: Lord, I want You with me always. I love You and Your son. I need to work on being a better servant, and the reminder is there in this verse: be prudent in speech. Guide my thoughts and words to glorify You.

1 Samuel 12: 16 Now therefore take your stand and see this great thing that theLord will do before your eyes.
Saul has been appointed king by God through Samuel. His people are threatened by the Ammonites, but they, as usual, doubt that the Lord will deliver them. Saul delivers the victory through God, but the people are having second thoughts about this whole king idea. Samuel leads the crowning of Saul, and then he makes this final speech. He calls on God for thunder and rain. God delivers that too.
These people are insufferable. Nothing satisfied them. We want a king. Okay, here's a king, now follow him. Well, maybe we don't want a king. We take it back. Too late, now you must follow him. But how can we know that this is God's will? Okay, let's see the power of God in a mighty storm...having been through a couple of days with mighty storms, I believe that they should be convinced, but you know that the doubt will be back.
Prayer: Remove my doubts, Lord. I long to be Your faithful servant. Don't let me be like these fickle people. Help me to trust You completely.

1 Samuel 9: 17 When Samuel saw Saul, the Lord told him, “Here is the man of whom I spoke to you. He it is who shall rule over my people.”
The people have asked Samuel for a king. His sons are not worthy to be judges. Samuel and God agree that a king is a bad idea. Samuel can't talk the people out of it however. God understands that they are relying on something that is not God, but he chooses Saul and brings him to Samuel anyway.
This story says a lot about people in general. We won't surrender our lives to our Creator, but we will submit to human rule. That seems weird. Most people acknowledge that they believe in a higher power, even if they aren't sure who it is. But they would more accepting of having another human rule over their lives than praying to God for guidance.
Prayer: I don't want to be like the rest, Lord. I submit myself to You first and foremost. Show me Your way, and I will follow.

2 Corinthians 9: 11 You will be enriched in every way for your great generosity, which will produce thanksgiving to God through us
Paul is appealing for money to go to churches in Jerusalem. He tells the Corinthians to give as much as they can. He guarantees it will be used for God's will.
It's sometimes hard to know how much to give. And it's true that people will take advantage of those who give freely. Maybe you even enable their begging. It feels good to know you have given generously. It's a shame that we are sometimes doubtful that our gifts were appropriately received.
Prayer: Lord, I want to be giving. Help me to know when and how to share my wealth. Guide my giving to Your glory.

2 Corinthians 8: 9 For you know the generous act of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that by his poverty you might become rich.
Paul is reminding the church in Corinth of the need in other churches. He speaks of their abundance, but they also have a need to balance the needs of fellow Christians. They need to serve.
I am dealing with the African student again. She needs money, and it is easy for me to think that I have done all I can. I haven't, but I am very busy and stressed, so that makes the situation difficult. I resolve to get to it tomorrow.
Prayer: Lord, help me to balance my abundance with the needs of others. Be with me and strengthen my resolve to serve Your people to Your glory.

Psalm 66: 19
But truly God has listened;
he has given heed to the words of my prayer.
But truly God has listened;
he has given heed to the words of my prayer.
This is a Psalm of praise. The author tells people to sing and cry out the good news of all the blessings of God's world. He offers to share his testimony of his own personal blessings.
I have been reading recently about my prayers of 1 year ago. I was praying for Sherri. Her treatment was successful. I feel like I could truly speak the words of this verse. That's cause for song and praise!
Prayer: I praise my God. I know my prayers have been answered so many times. My God is mighty. My God is faithful. My faith in Him is strong.

Ruth 4: 17 The women of the neighborhood gave him a name, saying, “A son has been born to Naomi.” They named him Obed; he became the father of Jesse, the father of David.
Naomi and her husband left Israel for Moab. While they lived there, both of their sons married Moabite women. All the men died, and Naomi wanted to go home. The daughters in law went with her, but one turned back after Naomi released them from their obligations. Not Ruth! She followed Naomi and cared for her, even after she married Boaz. And her son, who would become David's grandfather, and thus an ancestor of Jesus, was called Naomi's son.
What a beautiful ending to Ruth's story! She was so faithful, and her family was blessed by that. What a great honor to be a foundation of the house of David! God used Ruth and Naomi to prepare for the arrival of His son, the Messiah!
Prayer: Lord, I honor those women of faith, Naomi and Ruth. They represent all I hope to be remembered. Guide me to lead my family towards faith in You.

2 Corinthians 5: 15 And he died for all, so that those who live might live no longer for themselves, but for him who died and was raised for them.
Paul is telling about life eternal. He speaks of our earthly tent, and he says we groan while we are here, longing for our eternal home. He talks about the new creation. We are blessed to be part of that.
It seems appropriate to consider resurrection today. God sent His son, who suffered and died, but today begins the new creation. Now we live our lives for him, so that we can look our Saviour eye to eye in our eternal home.
Prayer: Lord, You have done so much for me. Today I rejoice and celebrate Your son's resurrection and all that means for people of faith worldwide. Thanks for the best Easter gift ever.
