Revelation 21: 7 Those who are victorious will inherit all this, and I will be their God and they will be my children.
John is seeing the New Jerusalem. The period of devastation is over, and the glory of the city is amazing to John. I would like to see the New Jerusalem, but it is the second part which encourages me most.
I want to live eternally as God's child. I want to be fully aware of His will, and I want to execute His wishes for me completely. I am absolutely confident that He knows the best way for me to live.
Prayer: Lord, I look forward to the time when I join You in Your holy city. I look forward to a life free from sin and pain. I will praise Your holy name and follow Your will in every way. It will be heaven for me and for all Your other children. Thanks for preparing a place for us.

Revelation 15: 3 and sang the song of God’s servant Moses and of the Lamb:
“Great and marvelous are your deeds,

These are the words of the 7 before the bowls are poured out. Then all kinds of bad things happen to those left on Earth. In the midst of the chaos of Revelation, a last word of praise....
I am wondering how Moses and the Lamb come together here. I understand how Moses led his people out of Egypt, but he was a man, flawed by weaknesses. Why not David? or Jeremiah? or Isaiah? A prophet would seem to be a more natural fit. Moses had his doubts; that is why he never made it into the Promised Land. Okay, I searched it. Moses represents the Law, and Jesus represents the New Covenant. That makes sense.
Prayer: I will add my own praise to You, O Lord. Your actions are always true. Your love is steadfast. You can see the truth when we are wearing blinders. Guide me, guide Your church, and guide the nations of the world to Your will.

Revelation 7: 17 For the Lamb at the center of the throne
will be their shepherd;
‘he will lead them to springs of living water.’[b]
‘And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.’[c]”
The speaker tells about those whose robes were made white by the blood of the lamb. They have suffered, but their suffering is over now. I like the image of the springs of living water and no more tears.
"The Lord is my shepherd" is my go-to verse for sleepless nights. I want a shepherd who knows my needs and fulfills them. He knows that I need rest and water; he comforts me when I am troubled.
I would be especially glad for this shepherd in the midst of the Apocalypse of Revelation!
Prayer: Lord, I am thankful for Your loving guidance; for Your attention to my needs; for Your strength when I am weak. I kneel before Your throne and praise Your mighty name!

Revelation 1: 8 “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.”
In another verse, Jesus speaks, and his message is that he died, but lives again with the keys to death and hell. This is the point I take from the beginning of Revelation--the power and majesty of the Trinity. They are the beginning and the end and a part of everything in between.
I love science, and I think about the beginning and end of the universe. I wonder why God created man, and I wonder how it will all end for man. I know there is so much I don't understand and never will in this life. I am grateful to a Greater Power who has the keys to all that is beyond me.
Prayer: Lord of the beginning and the end, have mercy on Your people. You shaped us and blessed us. You give us so much in this life and so much more in the next. I am thankful for Your holy guidance. Help me to see and follow Your path for me.

2 John 1: 6 And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands. As you have heard from the beginning, his command is that you walk in love.
John is writing to a woman. That woman could be me. I need God's guidance from the time I awake, like I noted in the Psalms reading for today. And God's command is clear, "Love one another."
It is awkward for me this morning. I have been awake for a while, but I am avoiding contact until everyone is awake, and the house is full of activity and noise. I do not want things to go badly, and I am afraid of confrontation. I will need to coat everything in God's love to make this day work.
Prayer: Lord, I am trying to follow Your commands. I do not trust myself to make this day a kind and loving one. I am waiting for the other shoe to drop. Please give me peace and the ability to listen without judgment. Guide my words and actions to be those You would want from me. Grant me patience and loving feelings.

1 John 5: 16 And so we know and rely on the love God has for us.
God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.
John is all over us about loving our brothers. Rather ironic, since today is the first time I have seen my brother or his wife since the trouble in our family. It all went well. A good time was had. It doesn't seem weird.
But do I love these people? Yes, they are children of God whether they know it or not. And John tells me I cannot love God, whom I can't see, unless I can love those I do. I am trying, Lord, but the hurt is still there.
Prayer: O, Lord, help me to love my brother. I am trying to overcome the apathy which helped me to heal my own hurt soul. I don't want to be in that position again, but I know I cannot be completely in tune with your will without loving those who were thoughtless. I need your guidance over the next couple of days especially.

John 21: 22 Jesus answered, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me.”
I have been noting this a lot lately--the need to follow your own path to Christ. Jesus has predicted Peter's death, and Peter wants to hear of John's fate. Jesus tells him that Peter and John will follow their own paths, and Jesus is not interested in sharing one man's path with the other.
I have always said I want the Grateful Dead song, "Ripple," played at my funeral. I know people will be shocked, but I love the song. I especially like the part where the singer says, "if I knew the way, I would take you home." That is how I feel about those I love; if I could show them the path to Christ, I would take them there. But each one must follow the path in "your steps alone."
Prayer: Lord, I want to focus on my walk with Christ. I pray that others, especially those I love, will do the same. I know that is the only way to true peace and eternal life. I give thanks for the guidance You have given me to help me prepare to go to my eternal home.

John 18: 22 When Jesus said this, one of the officials nearby slapped him in the face. “Is this the way you answer the high priest?” he demanded.
The disrespect which Jesus faced is unbelievable. He has gone so quickly from the Jesus of Palm Sunday to this. All Jesus said was that he had kept no secrets--that everyone had heard what he said openly.
He had not attacked the high priest or anyone else. He was humble, accepting his fate for what it was--his Father's will. This reminds me of so many who have suffered in history--the victims of the Holocaust or Apartheid or other civil rights discrimination. How brave they are to stand in the face of such disrespect!
Prayer: Lord, I honor those who have faced so much for You and for justice for their fellow man. I pray for them and for those who loved them just to stand by and see the injustice. I am always in search of Your will for me. Let me know when it is time for me to stand up against injustice for Your people.

John 12: 10 So the chief priests made plans to kill Lazarus as well
I normally choose a positive verse, and I could have done that with today's selections, but this one stuck with me. How evil were the Pharisees that they would plan to kill not only Jesus, but the one he raised from the dead already? Their self-interests were so powerful!
The line about one man dying to save their church kind of made sense. But killing Lazarus b/c his death was such a powerful testimony to Jesus's authority? Really? Wouldn't you stop and think, "Maybe THIS is not the way we should be going? What good is a church that kills people whom God has saved?"
I am dumbfounded. For all that is wrong with churches today, I still cannot think of any example that falls to this level.
Prayer: Lord, guide your churches well. Make us able to see when we are off course, and help us to bring people in--not put them off. Above all, make sure that we pursue Your will and not ours.

John 11: 44 The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face.
I have never seen this in a movie or on tv. I would like to. Jesus has called Lazarus, who has been in the tomb for 4 days, and he responds. What an image that would be!
The story also includes one of my favorite Bible passages--the shortest one--Jesus wept. I love how Martha and Mary's family are so dear to Jesus. I love how the women argue over serving him. I love how Mary anointed Jesus's feet with the expensive oil, and I love Jesus's rebuke to the disciple who criticized her.
I would like to be part of a family of faith like this.
Prayer: As Jesus raised Lazarus, as he loved Lazarus and his sisters, as we approach the celebration of the birth of Jesus, I am immersed in thoughts of faith. I ask for your blessings of healing and peace on so many that I care for. I pray for those who lack faith. I pray for spiritual guidance that I may more nearly follow Your will.

John 8: 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
John reports much of the conversation between Jesus and the doubters. I don't think that is emphasized as much in the other Gospels. Jesus is trying to make them see that he is the way, the truth, and the light, but they keep looking for reasons to disbelieve.
I like the verse, partly b/c it evokes memories of MLK and the civil rights struggle. Isn't this statement so true of that or any other case of discrimination? If people would see the truth about Jesus and ALL his people, they would be free. They could stop the hating and the judging and do all Jesus asked of them.
Jesus's way IS the only way.
Prayer: Lord, show me Your truth. I want to be free to represent You to everyone I meet.

John 4: 26 Then Jesus declared, “I, the one speaking to you—I am he.”
Jesus tells the Samaritan woman that he is the Messiah. So many times he asked people not to tell others that. So many times he was unsure that even the disciples understood that. And yet this WOMAN, this SAMARITAN...he tells her.
This is the beginning of the spreading of the Good News to the world. Now everyone is invited to the banquet. We can all be part of God's eternal kingdom!
Prayer: Lord, I thank you for the invitation to join Your kingdom. I long to spend eternity with You. I am especially grateful for the sacrifices You and Your son made to get my invitation to me.

John 1: 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind
It seems so appropriate to cite this verse one week before Christmas Eve. We will see a star shining in front of us that evening. We will acknowledge our Messiah, who is coming to us in human form as a helpless baby. He is the light of our existence.
I am looking forward to Christmas for so many reasons, but this one feels more sacred to me than most. The past weekend was very meaningful to me, and after the long trip Thursday night into Friday, I will be in my mother's home. She has prepared it for Christmas, even though she was weakened by the illness she has had. At 91, it is taking a long time for her to bounce back. I hold on to her, and I am so blessed to spend another Christmas with her. She is the basis of my life of faith.
Prayer: Lord, I look forward to the celebration of the arrival of Your son on Earth. I am so blessed to spend that time with my mother and with others who are so dear to me. I know that all of my days are blesses by the light You sent us in Jesus, but I am especially glad for the special holiday of his birth.

1 Peter 1: 8 Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy
Peter walked with Jesus, talked with him, learned from him. Peter was thrilled with those who believed even though they had no personal contact with Jesus in human form. I wonder what Peter would say about believers in 2013.
We are so far removed from everything that was present in Jesus's time. We have a totally different lifestyle, with all the modern stresses and conveniences. We are exposed to so much more information. We have so many material possessions along with all the temptations to focus on the things of this world.
Prayer: Lord, I have not seen Your son in the flesh, and I find it hard to relate to the world he walked in. But I do believe in You and Your son, and I am filled with joy and peace b/c I know a relationship with both of You and Your Holy Spirit make my life here and in eternity a glorious one.
As I have so many times before, I thank you for the gift of faith You have given me.

James 2: 13 because judgment without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful. Mercy triumphs over judgment.
James is a tough customer. He is rough on the listener, who must meet very exacting requirements. No faith without deeds, watch your tongue, etc.
But in the end, this is the verse I remember: be merciful or expect that you will receive no mercy in the judgment. So I can read all of James' requirements, and I can think about how I would do in his eyes, but I cannot use them to judge others.
I remember a former pastor who said the people who came to him to talk about judgment usually had someone in mind who they thought deserved tough judgment and punishment. I won't go there. I will examine my own behavior and leave it at that. The rest of you get mercy.
Prayer: Lord, look at me with mercy, for I am weak. Help me to turn a merciful eye on others. I need to avoid judging those around me. I need Your help to be more forgiving. I need Your help to look at others through Your loving eyes. Guide my thoughts, words and actions to make them more merciful.

Hebrews 13:
6 So we say with confidence,
“The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid.
What can mere mortals do to me?”

I have been feeling down concerning my friendships with "mere mortals." I do not feel the love from my fellow man, beyond my immediate family. I really do try so hard to do what is right, and I am hurt by the lack of fellowship with those I regard as friends. They don't see me the same way.
This message affirms my struggle, as I go to the Lord for comfort. He is my helper, so I am free from the fear that can overtake me. Being popular is not my strength, but I have God. I am not deficient; I am God's beloved child. I may be misunderstood by others, but God completely understands my motivations.
Prayer: Lord, I am wounded by Your people. I know I have many faults, but I try to treat others fairly. Still they pull away. Strengthen me to know to come to You to heal my hurts and to help me forgive the slights of others. You are my Rock.

Hebrew 7: 27 Unlike the other high priests, he does not need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people. He sacrificed for their sins once for all when he offered himself.
Paul is still trying to explain Jesus's place within the Hebrew religion. Under the Law, priests offered daily sacrifices, but now that is unnecessary. I remember wondering about that when I first read the OT. If it was so important, if there were so many rules attached to offering sacrifices, why don't we still do that?
Paul sums it up nicely. Jesus is like no other priest. He had no sins to atone for, and yet he took ours when he died on the cross. The sacrifice is done, once and for all time.
Prayer: Lord, I am grateful for the sacrifices You and Your son made for me and others. I am grateful to walk in a life of faith on this Earth, and I look forward to the eternal home earned for me on the cross.

Paul is explaining to the Jews how Jesus differed from the other men of faith in the OT. It is very significant to me, b/c I know that I want to spend time with Jesus. He "gets" me. I do not have to fear that I don't live up to his standards, even though I know I fall short of them, b/c he understands my human failings.
The Jesus in The Shack was a real eye-opener to me. I always thought that heaven might be boring, but not with Jesus there! He is the kind of friend we can't get enough of--the one who is always there for us in every way.

2 Timothy 2:
13 if we are faithless,
he remains faithful,
for he cannot disown himself.
This caught my attention, b/c Paul has just said disowning God will result in your being disowned. However being faithless does not result in a loss of God's faithfulness to us.
God stays with us no matter what. When we turn away, He is always there, waiting for us to turn back. Once we have the gift of faith, our weakness may intrude, but we are welcome back like the prodigal son once we realize what we have lost.
This is so comforting, for ourselves and for those we love. We may know that their faith is now weak, but they can return to it and to God at any time of their choosing. And we know that our own weakness will not result in God's turning away from us, even when we deserve just that.
Prayer: Lord, I am so grateful for your faithfulness. I know that I have turned away from You at times; that I have turned a blind eye to You and others; but I am also secure in the knowledge that Your faith in me has never waivered.

1 Timothy 6: 18 Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share.
Paul speaks of the rich, and he means me, b/c we in modern America have wealth beyond what Paul could have imagined when we are middle class. Doing good and sharing are commands for me. I must be generous and look for the opportunity to do good deeds.
Furthermore, I want to do this. I know I can be greedy, holding on to my wealth "for a rainy day." But in the Christmas season, especially, I am taking great joy from my Advent Random Acts of Kindness. I was disappointed today, b/c my planned recipient was not @ work. So I had to scramble to come up with something I could do @ home.
And for the bigger picture I support my church and many other charities. I try to remember those who do not have the advantages I do. Could I do more? Of course. Should I? You can count on me to reflect on that, even if I do not act on it all the time.
Prayer: I thank you, Lord, for the blessings which put me in a position to be able to share and do good deeds for others. I have been poor, and I try to remember what it is like to be uncertain about your future finances. Guide me to share in the way that You would like to see me share. Direct my actions to good deeds that You see in my path as I move through this life. Make me a more generous person overall.

1 Timothy 4: 8 For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.
I have just come in from some "physical training;" sweeping snow off the sidewalk and clearing the car and truck. Lately, I have been neglecting my "physical training," since the days are short and cold. I know the value of it, especially when I neglect it. My body tells me.
Godliness, on the other hand, has been in my mind a lot, both with the daily posts of Thanksgiving through November and now with 26 days of Random Acts of Kindness for Advent and in memory of the Sandy Hook victims.
Working on my physical needs is so important, but it is dwarfed by the need to remain in awareness of my spiritual needs. I am so busy, and it is easy to neglect both. I need this blog and the Life Journal scriptures as well as my other acts of thanksgiving and kindness to keep my life in balance. Oh, and that whole eternal life thing is not a small consideration either.
Prayer: O, Lord, help me to keep my daily life in balance, neglecting neither my physical nor spiritual needs. Guide my thoughts and actions to the godly track, which brings me closer to You and to the promise of eternity with You.

Colossians 4: 5 Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity.
Paul continues to give advice to the churches. I am contemplating the remaining 21 days of my Random Acts of Kindness done in memory of the Sandy Hook victims, so this is the jumping-off point for my thoughts. For the first 5 days, I focused on thanks. Yesterday I did a random act, leaving a TGIF message and $5 for someone who worked in my building; I don't know whose car I left the message on.
Now, outsiders is a concept I haven't tackled. Who are these outsiders? How can I display kindness to them, and can I add a component of Christian love to my display?
I will pray for guidance.
Prayer: Lord, guide me to the outsiders; those person who will benefit from a random act of kindness. Show me the ways I can make the most of the opportunity to model Christian love to them.

Philippians 4: 12 I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.
This really hit home with me. The secret of being content is not found in having the most money, the nicest house, not even the finest education, but it is in knowing God. When you are in a relationship with God, you don't have to fear being without the things of this world. And when you have plenty, it is important to remember that your true comfort is not found in abundance. You could lose it all, and you can still find God comforting you unconditionally with His love.
Prayer: Lord, I know where to turn in times of need and in times of plenty. I am so thankful that You are always there for me.

Ephesians 6: 2 “Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise
Paul is at his preachiest today. I do not like Paul when he is like this, but buried in the advice for women and slaves to obey, I found this nugget.
Cool...a commandment with a promise that everything will be all right for you in the future if you follow it. And Paul is right. If a child grows up in a home where the parents do their jobs, and the child honors that, it is a great beginning. We owe our children nothing less than to make this happen. It will not happen spontaneously. Like every human, the child has selfish desires which must be curbed for his good as well as society's. When a child is trained to be aware of the respect which others deserve, he will be happy and productive. That is a great beginning to raising a Christian!
Prayer: Lord, I thank you for my Christian upbringing. I honor my father and my mother, as well those who came before them, for providing me with a solid foundation. I can see all the blessings which have come to me as a result of the way I was taught to honor my elders. I pray the same for the children of today.

A great thought for Advent, as we prepare for the arrival of the Prince of Peace....
We discussed people dividing themselves into groups and bullying in our Advent study. I know where the answer is---that people who turn to Christ will find their peace. They won't need to lift themselves up by putting others down.
Peace is so much. It is more than a lack of war. Peace comes when we accept ourselves, and that is easier when you feel God's love for you is so great. You don't need to find a way to justify yourself at someone else's expense. You can accept that all people are one, and you don't need to divide them into groups.
Prayer: Help me, O Lord, to feel your peace. I know I should not judge and label Your people, but the temptation is so great. Destroy any hostility in my heart, and remind me just what is "the reason for the season."

Romans 13: 6 This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s servants, who give their full time to governing.
Well, this one is sure to cause a stir among some Christians. First, there is the acknowledgement that government servants of officials deserve respect. So much venom has been directed towards our federal government. I understand the frustration of so many, but, really? You feel that your hate is justified by the Lord? Hate is never okay; not towards any of God's people.
And furthermore, you actually OWE taxes? Government services should be paid for by the people? Why? Shouldn't the government be able to supply public works and workers without any contribution by you? NO!!!! Government is necessary, and it is not, in and of itself, evil. Be thankful for those who serve our country not just in the military but also by choosing to govern wisely. I know they can seem "rare as hen's teeth" at times, but you have to trust God's plan and stop the hate and entitlement rants.
Prayer: Lord, clean our minds of those who "hate on" our leaders. Instead let us all pray for Your guidance in the administration of our communities and our country and the world. Let Your will be done, on Earth, as it is in heaven. That includes Your will for our leaders as well as those we love.

Romans 10: 9 If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
Simple enough, isn't it? You have to believe, and you can't be afraid to speak your belief.
And yet, it is hard. Belief is not always easy, especially in a world of doubters. They wear away at you, and you wonder if you are the fool they imagine you to be.
Speaking about your faith can be tough too. There are restrictions on my speech at work, the main place I talk to people. There is the off-putting factor, where you don't want to come on too strong when your best path is to be a good example. You don't want to push people away from Christ by a perception of self-righteousness.
So, the answer is, as always, to listen to the still, small voice of God in deciding when to speak and what to say in a given situation. And the answer to a weakness of faith is to go to the Source, and tell God that you are weak and need strengthening.
Prayer-- Lord, strengthen my belief. Stand by me in my weakest moments, and help me to feel Your presence with me. Guide my speech, Lord, so that I may glorify You with my words. Help me to guide others to the comfort of faith in You.

Romans 8: 15 The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship.[f] And by him we cry, “Abba,[g] Father.”
Paul is rather hard to understand in these chapters at times. He even seems condescending in some verses. But sin is a tough topic, and he is trying to explain it to people far away. I guess he doesn't want to miss out on any point that came to his mind.
Verse 15 is encouraging. The Spirit is within us; even though we are weak, we are still God's chosen children. We can call out to our Father whenever we are in need or even to praise His goodness. And Abba listens. He comforts. He rejoices with us. We never have to fear being alone again.
Prayer: I praise you, God, for Your constant presence in my life. I know You are there for me 24-7. My fear is gone; I do not need to worry. You are my Father, and I am Your child for eternity. Please help me to feel Your presence every day, in everything I do and say.

Romans 3: 20 Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God’s sight by the works of the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin.
This sums up a dilemma faced by many in the faith. If we are not saved by works, then why bother to do good deeds? We are saved by our faith first; no one without faith can be in a relationship with God. If we are not in such a relationship, we cannot expect to suddenly gain such a relationship after death.
B/c we have a relationship with God, it becomes apparent to us all the ways we fall short of righteousness. This is not to say that all without faith are not good people; many nonbelievers are good, just, caring folks. In a way, these people are better than us, b/c they achieve goodness without God's guidance, but they are not saved anyway.
And many people who try to be good are just not humble enough to accept that there is a Superior Being. Their pride is a sin.
Prayer: I pray for all those who lack faith, who do not have a loving relationship with God. I hope that their eyes will be opened, that their ears will hear the Good News, and that in the end, they will receive the gift of faith in their hearts.

1 Thessalonians 5: 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
A good thought for the day after Thanksgiving--we should ALWAYS give thanks, not just on a special holiday!
I am thankful for the family who gathered yesterday. All of us were there, except for one who is living out of state, and her mother travels to her today, so I am sure she will hear of our group and the fine time we had.
It was nice to have everyone from young to old together. There was a bounty of food, of course, and lots of shared conversations. There were memories and plans to share. The little ones entertained everyone, and pictures were taken to record this date and fix it in our memories for Thanksgivings to come.
So today, we begin another year before the official day of thanks comes again. We need to be careful to find the time to give thanks EVERY day for God is good, and our lives are indeed a blessing.
Prayer: Lord, help me to be more thankful for my blessings every day of every month. I am especially grateful for this special holiday of Thanksgiving and for the days of Advent, leading to our celebration of the birth of Your son. But I also want to acknowledge the gratitude I feel for the little blessings in my life every day.

Thanksgiving
Matthew 28: 6 He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay.
Well, this is news for Thanksgiving, isn't it? The angel comforts the Marys; the same angel who made the guards shake and act like dead men. They must have been shaken, but they followed his directions. They were the first to spread the good news.
God is so faithful to us, and Jesus was so faithful to God. If only we could say the same. We know our faults, and we know God will always be there to pick up the pieces. Thanks be to God!
Prayer: Thank you, God, for the ultimate gift of Your son, Jesus. We are so fortunate to have You on our side. Help us to be more faithful.

Matthew 27: 53 They came out of the tombs after Jesus’ resurrection and[e] went into the holy city and appeared to many people.
Why don't I remember this part? I have read Matthew many times, I have heard many crucifixion sermons, and yet, I don't recall ever thinking about the faithful dead who rose at Jesus's death. It is a pretty amazing story, with an earthquake opening the tombs and the dead rising and going into town.
I remember Joseph of Arimethea asking for the body and putting it in a new tomb. Then everyone goes home and waits for the Sabbath to be over. Nothing at all about dead people rising....
This seems so significant to those of us who anticipate eternal life. I have heard talk about the thief who was crucified with Christ being the only person we KNOW is in heaven. Why, then, doesn't anyone talk about the first believers who rose from the dead?
Prayer: Lord, there is so much within Scripture that we miss. Guide my Bible study so that I can get the most out of it. I am thankful for the risen dead, and all that they imply for believers today.

Matthew 23: 3 So you must be careful to do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach.
Jesus speaks of the Pharisees. He is warning against those who are holy on the outside, but are rotten on the inside. They make a great show of religion, but they do not practice its basic principles.
I am taking this a step farther. I am not content with being a follower of any man; I want to follow God's own guidance for me. I should not worship anyone, despite how awesome they appear to be, b/c I can only worship God. I listen to God's voice in my ear; I will appreciate the efforts of those who speak on their own experiences with God and His word, but in the end, I must follow my own path.
Prayer: Lord, let me follow only You. Guide me to Your truth for me. I can learn so much from those who have made their faith their calling in life. Finally, however, I must depend on my personal relationship with You to guide my days and my ways.

Jesus has made the fig tree wither. When the disciples ask how it withered so quickly, Jesus told them basically that killing a tree is small potatoes when you have faith.
It is not easy to have that kind of faith. If it was, we would not see the level of tragedy we see in this world. The world makes us doubt. Our faith is weakened.
And, yet, we know of people with great faith who are helpless to change things in this world. We must count on the next world to strengthen us, b/c we are weak in this one.
Prayer: Lord, I believe, and I ask for so many things in my daily prayer. I ask for healing and comfort for those I care about, and even for others who my friends care about. I ask for relief from poverty and suffering. I look around, and the suffering and pain go on. Strengthen my faith, that I might be more able to pray and receive what I ask for.

Matthew 18: 4 Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
I was thinking about this very thing when I awoke this AM. I was thinking about people who treat others as though they were better than them. The movie I watched last night ("Pieces of April") put this in my mind. I was taking the position of the one who is belittled, judged and found wanting.
How hard it is to be in that position! I guess it makes sense that the person who is considered the lowest would be the one to be most in need of God. And, being in need of God, they are most likely to call out to Him and to receive His blessings.
At the time of our entry into heaven, then, this lowest person will be the greatest one in heaven, while the rest of us consider all the ways we relied on our own selves and put others down.
Prayer: Lord, help me to be more considerate of those who have been judged as the least; guide my words and actions in such a way to lift them up. Help me to be more forgiving of those who judge me as well.

Matthew 16: 18 And I tell you that you are Peter,[b] and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades[c] will not overcome it.
Simon is now Peter, the rock. He has expressed his faith that Jesus is the Messiah. On this kind of faith, the church is built.
Now I am worried about the church. So much good is done by churches, but membership is falling. Young people, especially, don't see the value of the church. The gates of Hades may not overcome the church, but how can it--we really--overcome apathy? Even young adults with faith do not see the church as a necessity in their faith walk.
Prayer: Lord, I pray for Your church. It has lasted for thousands of years, but it is threatened by trends in today's world. I know the power of a good church, and I pray that others will see that as well. Help me to do what I can to strengthen my church and all Christian churches.

Matthew 11: 25 At that time Jesus said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children."
The self-interest factor rises again in this passage. Although they are witness to the miracles, those in power fail to get the underlying message. Instead, all they see is the threat to their positions, and they must stop the threat by any means necessary.
The little children, the powerless, have less to protect. They are more open to the truth of the message. They come to know the Father through the Son. This is still true today.
Prayer: Let my eyes be opened, Lord, that I may see You as a little child, as one whose power is nothing compared to the awesome power of Your kingdom. Open my heart to receive Your truths.

John 8: 8 The centurion replied, “Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed."
Jesus heals all kinds of people in today's passages. This is the one who stood out for me. He doesn't want healing for himself, but for his servant. He knows the power of God, b/c he doesn't ask Jesus to come over and heal the servant; he knows that physical presence isn't the necessary ingredient. He has more faith than that--he knows Jesus can heal even when he is not physically present.
I know so many who need healing. They need healing of mind and body; I know the power of prayer. I pray for my friends and family.
Prayer: Lord, guide Your healing hands towards those I care about. Give them comfort, give them strength and endurance, be with them as they recover. I know all that You can do, and I humbly beseech you in Jesus's name.

Matthew 5: 13 “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot."
This part of Matthew is so full of great advice from Jesus. Yet this is the verse that spoke to me today. It is so easy to neglect your faith. You lose your saltiness, and what is your value then?
Yesterday I turned in my letter of resignation, announcing my intent to retire at the end of this school year. I know I will be a better human being when I am relieved from the stresses of this job. I have really enjoyed my career, but I get caught up in the "day-to-day" demands and I neglect my spirituality. I pray I will be "saltier" than ever next year! ;)
Prayer: Lord, do not allow me to be lukewarm. Keep my saltiness intact. I want to be a follower of Yours more than anything else. Remove the blocks that eclipse my clear view of You.

Matthew 2: 13 When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get up,” he said, “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.”
I am blown away by Joseph's ability to discern and follow the words of the angels. First, he believes the angel who tells him to marry Mary despite her pregnancy and honors his Maker. Then once the child is born, he flees to Egypt to protect mother and child again. Most people wouldn't do this-- uproot everything in their own lives to follow the Lord. They would rationalize a way to make a decision that protected their own self-interest.
I hope and pray that I can be open to God's voice in my life as well.
Prayer: Lord, deliver me from the voice inside my head that protects the status quo, even when Your voice is calling me elsewhere. Let me follow You and not what seems to be the safe course in my mind. Like all Your people, I stray from Your guidance at times. I want to be more faithful.

Psalm 124: 8 Our help is in the name of the Lord,
the Maker of heaven and earth.
We have weathered the storm overnight. I went to sleep with the wind and rain all around my house. I woke up to see the power had flickered, but, praise God, had come back on about midnight.
God was with us through the storm, and he is with me this AM as well. I am starting a new week with optimism, b/c I know I have His help to make it through whatever happens. I have the confidence of a true child of God. I remember when worries plagued me, and the "what-ifs" spoiled my pleasure in daily life--no more! God is good all the time. All the time God is good.
Prayer: Today I am grateful, Lord, for your help in times of trouble. I am so thankful that I know where to turn when the going gets rough. I place my worries in Your holy hands, and I find relief.

2 Corinthians 9: 7 Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. 8 And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.
I had to choose 2 verses today, b/c they are one complete thought. Paul is in the midst of running a church, and he is trying to get the members to give to the church as they had promised.
It is a sticky situation; one that all churches find themselves in. So much damage has been done by those who exploit the giving nature of believers. Paul brings it home, as far as I am concerned. Give in the way you are moved to give, cheerfully, and God will bless you in every way imaginable.
A wise cashier said it to me once, regarding those who were begging for money outside the store where she worked: " I give it, and that is good for me. If they misuse it, that is bad for them." I don't give to every beggar I meet, but I see her point, and I give cheerfully to my church and to others whose need I see.

Oh, that Paul surely does have a way with words! These are some of his best--we live in this world and are yet not of it, so we surely are sorrowful, and yet we rejoice in the Lord. We may not have all the material wealth, and yet we make many rich with the example of our life in Christ, so that they may become believers as well. We may not have all the items we desire, and yet we have the key to Eternal Life.
Prayer: Lord, I thank you and rejoice in all my faith provides me. I may not have much nor am I rich, but I have all I need in this world and the next.

2 Corinthians 2: 10 Anyone you forgive, I also forgive. And what I have forgiven—if there was anything to forgive—I have forgiven in the sight of Christ for your sake.
A slim pickings kind of day...I had trouble finding a verse. I took this one b/c I like the mutual forgiveness, although I had trouble with Paul's tone in general on this post.
It is appealing to think you would have this kind of relationship with another Christian. Except for Elaine and sometimes Mother, I don't think I do. I am not sure why I have not gotten closer to people in my church, but I am sad that my relationships with some who I thought of as friends in Christ later turned into hurt for me.
But ultimately it is the right thing to do when you forgive. I can forgive b/c of my faith. That is a real strength, and it offers so much comfort to me.
Prayer: Lord, help me forgive. Let me move into forgiveness swiftly and without harmful acts in the meantime. Help me to forgive for your sake as well as my own.

1 Corinthians 13: 3 If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast,[b] but do not have love, I gain nothing.
Acts are not the final answer. It is the feeling that matters. You can be VERY good, causing everyone to admire your dedication, but if the feeling isn't there, so what? You have gained nothing.
Love is described so well by Paul. It is tough to live up to that. You can't keep score of rights and wrongs; you must be patient. That so goes against our human inclination. It is so hard to let go, to wait for someone you love, to forgive those who have hurt you or others you care for. But that is just what we are called to do.
Good thing faith strengthens us. We need all the help we can get.
Prayer: Lord, help me to love your people in they way you direct me to. Let me get past my own hurt feelings to find the depth of feeling love that makes me more like You.

Paul talks about the body of Christ, our church. Our own church has suffered; I did suffer with it, but maybe I did not do enough to honor it instead.
I do love so much about our church. I love that we are socially aware, that we offer opportunities to the larger community, and there are many people there who are the very best kind of Christian.
We have lost so many members, however, to death, to moves, to the controversy that split us apart. I would like to see our church reach the honor it deserves, and I pledge to do what I can to restore it.
Prayer: Lord, help me to build your body, the church. Let me do what I can to bring it honor.

Best of Paul; worst of Paul. This verse suggests the hymn "One Bread, One Body," which I find very inspiring. Then Paul starts with the men are better than women stuff. How can he be so polarizing to me?
Well, I will stick with the positive. Paul reminds us that, as Christians, we are as one. We need to look out for each other and the church. We need to represent Christ well.
Prayer: Lord, guide me to find the inspiration in your word without becoming irate at your servant, Paul. I know that he was only a man, but so much of his writings are so inspired, and then I hit a stumbling block. Give me the wisdom to understand the writing and the writer.

This is about who gets the gift of faith. God didn't present himself to the mighty in the early days of the church. Paul, Peter, and the others went to the lowly people, the unimportant ones, b/c they were ready to accept the gift. Others had interests to protect which put a wall around their souls so that they couldn't see the truth.
I think of those people of faith today who are like this. There are some who mouth the words but do not act in the way of faith, b/c their influence and power satisfy them. And there are those who mourn, who suffer, who struggle in every way imaginable, and they need the faith. They accept the gift, and they grow b/c of it.
Prayer: Lord, I am blessed to have the gift of faith. I suffered through the struggles of my life, and they left me open to let You in. I have been comforted time and again. Thank you for always being there for me.

Job 31: 39 if I have devoured its (the land) yield without payment or broken the spirit of its tenants
Job finishes his defense of his actions by talking about the land. It goes so well with my FB thankfulness statement for today!
God has made us stewards of his land. First we must acknowledge how great an honor that is. Our land is beautiful and fertile. We are kept alive from its bounty. We are obligated to do what is best for the land, for ourselves and future generations.
The people living on God's land are His people. We must also honor their spirits. We must meet everyone with love.
Prayer: Lord, I honor Your land and the people who on it. I pray for guidance to act in ways which build up both.

Galatians 4: 7 So you are no longer a slave, but God’s child; and since you are his child, God has made you also an heir.
Paul tells us that all people were held in slavery, like children with no understanding, until Christ came. Now we are heirs of God--fully able to inherit all His goodness and mercy.
The Galatians were seeking Law--rules to live by to prove their obedience to God. Paul says we don't need the ancient Law any more; we just need to accept the gift God gave us in Christ.
It is so easy, and it is so hard. To fully accept the gift of Christian faith, we must give up our selfish desires for the greater good. This flies in the face of human instinct. It is a constant struggle, and it is struggle enough, without worrying about rules of Law.
Prayer: Lord, help me to fully accept the gift of love you gave me when you sent your son to save me. Help me to see my world not in terms of Law but in terms of Love.

Job 28: 20 But where can wisdom be found? Where does understanding dwell?
Job is summarizing. He explains his understanding of the world. He is an amazing speaker; even after all he has been through, his thought process and his choice of words are unbelievable.
He knows how the world works, and he knows that nothing in this world is the source of wisdom. God is the only true source of wisdom and understanding. We cannot, should not, be overly attached to anything in this world. The answers we seek are in heaven.
Prayer: Lord, remind me that You are the ultimate source of wisdom and understanding. Let me follow Your path so that my life is a gift back to You in return for the gift of faith You have given me. Amen

Mass hysteria has ensued. The crowd has been driven into a frenzy. Pilate knows he is doing wrong, but he just wants it to be over.
How many times have I shrugged my shoulders and just wished for the bad times to be over? Have I let wrong be done b/c I didn't have the courage, the fortitude, to stand up for right? Have I let the feeling of belonging allow me to be carried into a place of wrongdoing just so I can feel validated by those who surround me?
Prayer: O, Lord, let me stand for what is right, even when it is a struggle to continue the good fight. Lord, help me to know when it is time to distance myself from the crowd and stand up against the majority who are misguided. Let me, above all, know and follow Your will, b/c that will always be the better choice.

Mass hysteria has ensued. The crowd has been driven into a frenzy. Pilate knows he is doing wrong, but he just wants it to be over.

Mark 14: 36 “Abba,[f] Father,” he said, “everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.”
This is the ultimate in "thy will be done." Jesus knows just how bad it will be. As a man, he cannot want to face what it going to happen. As God's son, he does it anyway.
Often I want the "cup" I am facing taken from me. I want no more pain, no more suffering for those I love and for myself. I want easy guidance in making the hard decisions.
I need to spend less time trying to make everything all right and more seeking my Father's will and following it.
Prayer: I rejoice that I have a Father in heaven for whom nothing is impossible. I know His will is the best path possible. Guide me to that path, Lord.

Mark 9:
24 Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!”
I love this man. I know how he feels. The world has this effect on all of us. We believe, and yet we have unbelief too.
Also in this passage is the rich man who cannot sell everything he owns to follow Jesus. I love him too. There are times when I cannot give something up to follow Jesus. I am too tied to my sins and self-interest.
Prayer: Lord, guide me to a life filled with belief; a life which is so full of You that the little things of Earthly life do not matter, and I can follow you completely.

Mark 6: 52 for they had not understood about the loaves; their hearts were hardened.
Okay, this is just incredible. The disciples have seen people healed, raised from the dead, and then the feeding of the multitude with 5 loaves and 2 fishes. And yet, in the dark of predawn, they see a man walking on the water near their boat, and they think, "Ghost!" They are afraid.
How could they NOT know it was Jesus? They have witnessed his mighty power, over and over. They know he has sent them ahead, and surely it is in his plan to catch up to them. People are so strange, and the disciples are no exception. Their hearts were hardened indeed. They are so quick to revert to self-reliance and the fear that they are inadequate to the threats against their selves. So am I.
Prayer: Lord, let me recognize You in my everyday life. Help me to see what I need to do in Your eyes. The busy-ness of my life works me into a frenzy, and I may let You walk by, even mistake You for a threatening presence. I need guidance, and I need Your strength and comfort.
