Zechariah 7: 9 “This is what the Lord Almighty said: ‘Administer true justice; show mercy and compassion to one another.
The people wonder if they need to fast, as they have in the past. God is not impressed by this show of faith. He tells them what he really wants.
Justice...do I administer it? Am I merciful and compassionate? Of course, I fall short. I am shackled by my own self-interest, and I can tell myself in a thousand different ways why I have behaved so.
Prayer: Lord, guide me in the path of true justice. Help me to stand up for the oppressed. Help me to show mercy and compassion in my day-to-day life. I want to be a beacon to Your people, a light in today's world reflecting my faith in the One True God.

Luke 12: 48 But the one who does not know and does things deserving punishment will be beaten with few blows. From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked/
So many times I have been thankful for the gift of faith I have received. Here is the flip side. So much more is expected of me b/c of that! It is not enough to be as good as others who lack faith--I am held to a higher standard.
GULP! I try, I really do. But then life intervenes. I am busy; I don't feel well; Ron is going through another trying time; other people hurt my feelings. How quickly I let myself slide into sinful ways!
Prayer: Lord, strengthen me so that I can bring You all that you expect of me. I know that I have been given so many blessings, and I am thankful for the faith which gets me through the trying times. Help me rise to Your expectations for me; help me to find and fulfill Your will for my every day. Amen

Luke 8: 14 The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life’s worries, riches and pleasures, and they do not mature.
This hits close to home. The first kind of people are tempted by the devil. The second have a faith that does not survive trials. But how many more of us are the seeds among thorns?
We are choked by not only worries but by riches and pleasure! So many distractions from the path of faith!
Prayer: Lord, grant me a maturing faith. Help me to grow in my quest to be more like your Son, who told this parable. Guide my focus on the things that matter; do not let me become distracted by the worries or pleasures of my daily life.

Luke 6: 37 “Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.
Wow! That is short and to the point! Now if only putting it into practice was as easy.....
It is so hard not to judge. We apply our past experiences to new situations. That makes us human. When does being careful turn into judgment?
What if we are condemning those who are truly wrong? Is that okay? Or do we "condemn the act without condemning the actor?"
I know that forgiving is the only right thing to do. I wish I found it easier to do it. I can fall back into my old ways and wallow in the misery of being treated badly.
Prayer: Lord, show me how to avoid judgments and condemnation, so that I can avoid judgment and condemnation. Help to forgive more readily. I want to be more like your son, who gave us such great advice.
Amen

Luke 5: 31 Jesus answered them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick."
Jesus was eating with Levi and his tax collector friends. The righteous ones want to know why he keeps such company.
On this Sunday, I am thinking about the company I keep. Last summer, when things were so bad, I considered leaving my church. No one there seemed to care.
Now trying times are here again. Again, the indifference of people has me wondering. I know that I do not "hear the cries of the needy" either. Do we live in a sick society? Are we focused on the "idols" and not on the love for our fellow man? Do we rush right by the "sick" ones--the ones who need us most?
Prayer: O. Lord, guide my steps to those who need to hear Your voice. Help me to say and do the right things to further the plan You have for me and "the least of these, my brethren."
Amen

Luke 4: 42 At daybreak, Jesus went out to a solitary place. The people were looking for him and when they came to where he was, they tried to keep him from leaving them.
The day before Jesus had a busy day. The people, believing in him, brought all those who suffered and he healed them. They want him every day, to relieve all their suffering, but that is not his mission.
Jesus had to move on, to visit other towns in Judea. His Father's will for him was bigger than one little town.
I would like Jesus to do my personal bidding as well. There has been plenty of suffering in my family, and I want it stopped. Jesus as the Son of Man could not be in all places to all people at once. As the risen Savior he is always available to me through prayer, although I cannot feel his physical touch as the people of Judea could.
Prayer: I praise a God who is always available, whether I am suffering or rejoicing. I long for the day when you are present with me physically as well as spiritually. I need you, how I need you, every hour I need you...

Luke 2 : 47 Everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and his answers.
This is the 12 year old Jesus in the temple with the teachers. I teach 12 year olds too. They are still children, with a childlike understanding. Jesus was clearly not one of them.
How little we know about Jesus as a child! We jump from the infant to the 12 year old. Then we are told that he returned home and was obedient. Next stop: the wedding @ Cana.
I wish I could meet the child Jesus. I love children--all children--but this one would have been something special.
Prayer: I want to know you, Lord, in all your manifestations. I want to stand in the glow of your glory, I want to feel the presence of the Holy Spirit. And I especially want to walk and talk with Jesus. Guide my steps in the path which will lead me to eternal life with you.

Luke 1: 42 In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear!"
Elizabeth is being visited by Mary. Her words become a part of the "Hail Mary" Catholics pray.
Elizabeth knew, by the reaction of John the Baptist within her, that Mary was carrying our savior. How awesome it must have been to have such certainty. Two thousand years later, doubt comes so easily. To have been a character in the narrative, although not an easy life, must have been a life so committed to God.
PRAYER: Lord, strengthen my faith. Make me more sure of you, more certain of the path I must take to fulfill all the promise you placed within me. Amen

Revelation 22: 13 I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.
It is comforting to think of a God who always is and always was and always will be. Our lives are so short, in the greater scheme of things.
Before there was Earth, there was God. Right now, when I need something, God is available to show me the way to it. Forever, God will be there for me and for all His children.
Prayer: Lord, I am humbled by your power and majesty and wisdom. I am thankful for all you have done and will do for me and those I love. I praise your unending love and patience with me. I long to be in better contact with your will for my life.
Amen

Ezekiel 39: 9 “‘Then those who live in the towns of Israel will go out and use the weapons for fuel and burn them up—the small and large shields, the bows and arrows, the war clubs and spears. For seven years they will use them for fuel."
I love this image. It is almost like turning swords into plowshares. The weapons of mass destruction become the people's fuel. They warm their homes and cook on the remains of the attack.
How comforting this would be to a people who had been enslaved and denied their most basic needs. Now they don't have to worry about collecting wood! They know they will be warm and fed. God provides what his people need.
Prayer: O, Lord, provide for my needs like you did for your people in times gone by. I, too, am going through a time when my most basic needs are called into question by my injury. Help me to get through the mundane, day-to-day tasks which have now become so difficult. Guide me to the best ways to do all I need to do.

I need a new heart. The heart of stone does not serve me nor anyone else well. I need a new spirit. I need to let go of resentments and expectations which serve no one.
"Go where you are celebrated" is kind of like shaking the dust off your feet, as Jesus told the disciples. Then you move on, dust-free. Your new heart and spirit are ready for the place which is God's will for you.
Prayer: Lord, free me from the misery which expectation and resentment cause inside me. Give me a new heart and a new spirit to live my life fully in the way You would have me live.

I need to rest. I will pray for the blessings of that.
Prayer: Lord, I need your blessing to help me cope with the brokedown palace of my body. Please guide me towards the blessed rest I need, so that I have the endurance to do Your will in the day to come.

Daniel 3: 28 Then Nebuchadnezzar said, “Praise be to the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, who has sent his angel and rescued his servants! They trusted in him and defied the king’s command and were willing to give up their lives rather than serve or worship any god except their own God.
The trio refused to worship the king or his idol, and yet they survived the fiery furnace. Their level of faith was awe-inspiring. They had been living well under the king, but their integrity remained. They had not been corrupted by power.
The king himself saw this. Although he was not yet converted to the worship of the true God, he recognized the power the trio had in their act of faith.
Wouldn't it be nice if unbelievers were able to see the same traits in today's Christians?
Prayer: Strengthen my faith, O Lord. Let the example of my faithfulness be a beacon to unbelievers and believers alike. Help me to trust you completely.

I trust God b/c the true light comes from him. "In Him, there is no darkness at all..."
Prayer: Lord, let Your light shine on me and on those I love. Protect us from the forces of darkness. Guide our thoughts, words, and actions so that Your light might shine from us, showing others the one true path.

Lamentations 3: 25 The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him,
to the one who seeks him;
It is still all gloom & doom, but in the middle of the wailing, the author pauses for these thoughts. We must wait patiently for God is always there. "Great is thy faithfulness...morning by morning new mercies I see."
I am awake in the middle of the night; it seems as though every part of me aches. I have resorted to my last pain pill, hopeful that it will give me another hour of sleep before work.
I need a faithful God about now. My hope is in his mercy to get me "my daily bread."
Prayer: O, Lord, I need you, how I need you. Ease my pain, still my heart, and help me to rest before the new day begins. I long to do your will, but my body is weak. Give me strength and endurance through this time of trials.

Prayer: Lord, I seek your healing and help. Guide me in the path where You would have me go. Heal me both physically and spiritually.

The dragon is still after us, I guess. Satan knows our weaknesses, and he gets into our heads and exploits them. It is bot easy being a servant of the Lord.
I have been really down. First the stress of another school year, then the strep throat, and finally the broken arm. I feel alone and helpless. I must consciously remember not to give into the negative thoughts. I must turn to God for comfort & strength.
Prayer: Lord, be with me. Redirect my negative thoughts. Give me patience & strength. Amen

Ezekiel 26: 13 And I will stop the music of your songs, and the sound of your lyres shall be heard no more.
More gloom and doom. In the middle of it all, this struck me as oh, so sad. No more music. When I am down, singing along with a favorite song can change the whole tone of my day.
Maybe I sing, "my God is an awesome God" or "this is the day that the Lord has made." How sad it would be to know God had abandoned you. Thanks to Jesus, we never have to worry about that.
Prayer: I am so grateful for my personal relationship with Jesus. I know that my awesome God will never fail me; that every day is a gift from God that I can rejoice in.

Ezekiel 22 7 Father and mother are treated with contempt in you; the sojourner suffers extortion in your midst; the fatherless and the widow are wronged in you
Boy, could I have used a Psalm today! Gloom & doom from Revelation & Ezekiel are what I got instead.
God has had it with these evil ones. Respect is our key trait of the month @ school, and these people lack it. The ones who deserve honor or sympathy are trampled in their self-serving quest.
I will focus on the needs of those who are being abused. Give respect to those who have made sacrifices, those who mourn, and strangers in your midst.
Prayer: Lord, guide me to show respect to the deserving and the needy I encounter. Amen

Ezekiel 18: 20 The soul that sins shall die. The son shall not suffer for the iniquity of the father, nor the father suffer for the iniquity of the son; the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself.
This is the idea that sticks with me from today's readings. Every person has his or her own choice to make. The sins of the father are not visited on the son. The sins of the son are not visited on the father.
Furthermore, if a person turns away from sinful ways and repents, all is forgiven. If a person had been righteous and turns to sin, it is the sins that are remembered. You get no credit for your formerly godly actions.
Justice is what God is putting forth. Those who choose evil but then turn to good have suffered enough in making that choice. We should not be constantly remembering their past deeds. The child of the biggest sinner gets an even break. And the parent of the big-time sinner is not judged by their child's deeds.
Prayer: Lord, lead me away from the tendency to judge--to put the burden of past actions or actions of a family member onto those I meet. I should accept the current acts of those I meet, and I should celebrate those who are trying to follow You as my brothers and sisters in Christ. Help me to see Your people with the kind of love that you see in them.

Psalm 70: 4 May all who seek thee
rejoice and be glad in thee!
May those who love thy salvation
say evermore, “God is great!”
Praise is the name of the game this Sunday. I have started another school year with sickness, but I made it through the week, thank you, Lord. I have met some wonderful kids. I am working with people who care.
Today I plan to attend my church and then travel to see my daughter. I will spend this Sunday with people who rejoice in and know God. We have the peaceful assurance that God is always on our side. We say, "God is great!" And we know that those surrounding us understand why we say that.
Prayer: Lord, I praise you for all you are to me. I love how you are always available to me. I rejoice that your gift of faith gives me the peace I need to live in this troubled world. And I look forward to the day when your gift of salvation brings me home to You.
