Acts 6: 10 But they could not stand up against the wisdom the Spirit gave him as he spoke.
This will not end well. Stephen was chosen as one of the 7 who would look after the flock while the disciples concentrated on the Message. Stephen had haters, though, and they set him up. They were the kind who like to argue, and they could not win against Stephen, due to his having the Holy Spirit guiding him. They found false witnesses and took him to the Sanhedrin to charge him with preaching about Jesus and trying to change Mosaic law.
Poor Stephen. He was just doing God's will, and he got caught in a pattern of sinful self-interest which leads to his death. Stephen knew he was in touch with God, and he knew what his eternal reward would be, but that couldn't have completely negated his fear at being taken to the Sanhedrin. And to sit there while others lied about him! Would I be as brave if my faith were being challenged in this way? I am not at all sure.
Prayer: Lord, strengthen my faith against all challengers. Let me see the Holy Spirit's guidance for my thoughts, words, and actions. Give me the fortitude to stand strong against all who doubt. Comfort me when my faith causes me to be troubled.
Amen
