Psalm 72:
13 He will take pity on the weak and the needy
and save the needy from death.
David is finishing his Psalm with this appeal for the king (himself). He knows that he needs God to fulfill his potential as the right kind of king, good news for all his people. In the other OT verses, the ark of God is restored to the people after the Philistines captured it. It has caused the Philistines nothing but trouble--they have been afflicted with tumors and rats---but they attack Samuel and the Israelites when they gather to celebrate its safe return. God causes horrible thunder, and their attack is thwarted.
Okay, I am still waiting for news on Sherri. This verse is my plea for hope for her. I also was drawn to the story of the return of the Ark. The people returned to God when it came back, and Samuel told them to put away their idols. It reminds me of the 40 day-40 bag challenge for Lent. I am simplifying my life by ridding it of the things which hold me down. The need to manage so much stuff is an idol I don't need. When it is all gone, I will have more time to focus on the Lord.
Prayer: Lord, I am most of all asking for healing for the weak and needy in my life. Like David, I see a real need for Your mercy on those who suffer. I promise to place my focus more squarely on you as I simplify my life.
Amen
