Numbers 14: 34 For forty years—one year for each of the forty days you explored the land—you will suffer for your sins and know what it is like to have me against you.
God is really angry. His Chosen People are never satisfied. They complain about his BFF, Moses. They are ready to rebel. Moses sent a party to explore The Promised Land, but most of them said it would be impossible to take it. Now all of the naysayers will die during the 40 years they must wait.
Having God against you sounds so bad. What would you do to cause Him to turn against you? The Israelites doubted both God and His messenger. In the NT verses for today, Jesus warned very specifically against speaking against the Holy Spirit.
Prayer: Lord, You have known many faithless generations. You have seen people turn against You no matter how hard You tried. Please forgive Your people. We fail time and again. Love us anyway.
Amen
I chose the NT verse in 2016, but the takeaway was the same.
