John 13:   16 Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him.

Jesus has just washed his disciples' feet. Peter objected, but Jesus wants to make the point that no one is above serving others. And as his servants, they need to understand that he served them so that they would continue to serve after he was gone. There is nothing we could do for God that is beneath our dignity.

It's an uphill battle to fight our sinful selves. We can do all the right things for the wrong reasons. We must stay humble, while we stand firm in our core beliefs. That's a tricky business. Ron questioned the altruism behind volunteering after a commercial for an award given on the local news. I was a bit shocked, and I wondered why these people were volunteering if not for good reasons. Ron said they might want the praise of others. Good point. I'm still thinking most volunteers are altruistic, but I understand that some may be motivated by sinful pride and need for affirmation.

Prayer:  Lord, help me to become a more humble servant. I'm inclined to help, but let me see when my motivation is for my glory and not Yours. I know the desires of my heart aren't always in line with Your will. I confess my sins. Forgive me.
Amen
