Matthew 11: 7 While John's disciples were leaving, Jesus spoke about him to the crowds: “When you went out to John in the desert, what did you expect to see? A blade of grass bending in the wind? 8 What did you go out to see? A man dressed up in fancy clothes? People who dress like that live in palaces!
Jesus says they came to see a prophet, but they saw that and more. He is very complimentary towards John, but then he says that everyone in the kingdom of heaven is greater than John.
I'm intrigued by Jesus's words. The people didn't go to see a celebrity or a spectacle. John was so rough, so wild. Jesus said that he was accused of being demon possessed. Then Jesus came, and they said he acted like a regular guy too much. There was no pleasing these people. It's a mystery to me why this was God's plan. I know John got everyone's attention, but doesn't it seem like 2 cousins with the same goals would have been more similar?
Prayer: Lord, your words and works remain a mystery to me. I am glad that I only have to believe, not to understand. I'm still looking through this dark glass, but I trust that some day it will be all clear. Guide my path towards You.
Amen
