John 1: 12 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God
John doesn't recount the nativity. He doesn't have the flight to Egypt nor the boy in the synagogue. He goes straight from images of eternity to John the Baptist. Then he describes the meeting between these cousins. And he tells us why it all matters.
I'm running into a lot of atheism these days. Not sure if the Christmas activities bring out their needs to feel superior to the faithful, or maybe it's a reaction to the election frustration of so many progressives, but they are out there. And I don't know what to do with them. I kind of want to explain my faith, and I also want to move past them and anything else that would ruin my Christmas.
Prayer: I am praying for nonbelievers. I'm sure that they need prayer all the time, but this season must really rankle them. It's bound to occur to them that they are missing out on something they don't understand. I am especially praying for those who respond to Christmas with anger. Soothe these troubled people before they can harm Your faithful.
Amen
